- Detail before winter and again after the salt is gone.
- Heavy use (kids, pets, long commutes) means every 2 to 3 months.
- Regular washing between details does most of the work.

A simple schedule that works here
| When | What | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Late fall | Full detail | Protection on before the salt |
| Early spring | Full detail | Salt and grime off paint, wheels and carpets |
| Summer | Interior detail | Beach trips, pets, sports gear |
| Anytime | As needed | Spills, pet hair, before selling |
Why winter matters most
New Jersey roads get salted and brined all winter. That salty film builds up on the paint, the lower panels and the carpets from your shoes. Getting it off in spring, and having protection on the paint before winter, makes a big difference over the years you own the car.
Heavy use needs more
If you commute long distances, drive for work, or haul kids and dogs every day, detailing every two to three months is reasonable. A car that sits in a garage and gets weekend use can go longer.
Between details
- Wash every couple of weeks, more often in winter.
- Shake out floor mats and vacuum when you can.
- Deal with spills and bird droppings right away.
- A ceramic coating makes regular washing much faster.

Common questions
Is once a year enough?
For a lightly used, garaged car it can be. For a daily driver in New Jersey, twice a year (before and after winter) is a better minimum.
What's the difference between a wash and a detail?
A wash cleans the surface. A detail deep-cleans inside and out and adds protection. Our guide on detailing vs car washes explains more.
