The short answer
Professional coatings are rated for years. Our 3-Year Ceramic Coating is designed for about three years of protection with normal care. Spray waxes and sealants, by comparison, usually last weeks to a few months.
What makes a coating last longer
- Proper prep. A coating bonds best to clean, decontaminated and polished paint.
- Gentle washing. Hand washing with a pH-neutral soap keeps the coating slick.
- Garage or covered parking. Less sun, sap and bird droppings means less wear.
What wears a coating down faster
- Automatic car washes with brushes and harsh chemicals.
- Letting road salt, bird droppings and sap sit for weeks.
- Scrubbing with dirty towels or household cleaners.
New Jersey winters
Road salt and brine are hard on any paint. A coating doesn't make the car immune, but salt rinses off much more easily. Wash more often in winter, especially the lower panels and wheels. Our winter car care guide covers the details.
How to tell it's still working
Water should bead up and roll off, and the car should get clean with a simple wash. If water starts sheeting slowly and dirt sticks, it's time for a check-up.

Common questions
Does ceramic coating mean I never have to wash my car?
No. You still wash it, but it's faster and dirt comes off more easily.
Can I take a coated car through a car wash?
Touchless is better than brushes. Hand washing is best for keeping the coating in good shape.
